I have been to both speed trenches in the south of France. They were both built for the best angle for the Mistral winds that blow in from the north. The main problem with these trenches is that they are carved out of sand. When the wind came up to a good speed you could not open your eyes due to the blowing sand.We had to stay in our cars till it blew over.It costs a fortune to compete there as these trenches have to be constantly dug out due to the shifting sand. One is flooded from the sea [ST.Marie de la Mere]. The other at ST.Louis is filled with a huge pump.At the Canary Islands speed site sand is also a problem when the wind is howling. It is also hard to get there and there are few places to stay that are close.
