Water... E-mail
Saturday, 28 October 2006
Well, the trough that passed over the (usually dry) goldfields during the week managed to dump a significant amount of rain on the lake, leaving surface water coving a large area.

I am considering hiring my services out to resolve droughts in the third world!

But seriously, unlike the dry (mud) lakes of Nevada, the rain is not a bad thing here on the salt lake. Instead of turning the lake to mud, the water dissolves the top crusty layer of salt, leaving a perfectly smooth surface when it dries;

The amazing surface left when the water evaporates.

The only concern is that if the water sits on the surface for too long, the hard salt crust, only an inch think, can turn soft, making the surface slow and potentially unusable for sailing. Only time will tell, but it is going to be at least one week before we will be able to sail again.
